Penn Library Annual Survey of Who Asks Questions Where
In four, week-long cycles each year, the Library collects data on various kinds of questions asked at service points and librarian offices. Along with questions, we count the number of items circulated and reshelved, as well as the number of exits from our campus locations. We have found that these data are highly correlated, and the annual renewal of counts helps to monitor the relationships between them. These data are used to estimate outputs, such as the frequency of in-house collection use. More important, the counts allow us to assess the distribution, variation, and change in reference services across the communities we serve and their libraries.
